A unique collection of annual and perennial plants will be available at the May 10, 2008 Woodinville Garden Club Plant Sale, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ste Michelle Winery. Look for hard to find heirloom tomatoes, an amazing line up of sunflowers and the most robust annuals for our NW climate. Pick up the perfect Mother’s Day gift – choose from hanging baskets, galvanized metal salad tubs and mini-terra cotta planters perfect for the kid-sized budget.
Back by popular demand are Brandywine tomatoes, an heirloom variety with authentic tomato flavor. Imagine a luscious tomato, still warm from the vine and paired with grilled Ahi tuna – pure bliss! Other in-demand tomato varieties offered at the sale include heirloom Super Marzano, the perfect roma for sauce, Sweet Million, Early Girl, Legend, Taxi, and Yellow Pear Cherry.
Coleus ‘Pineapple’ is new this year, with scalloped edges and vibrant ruby and chartreuse leaves, a perfect foil for chocolate or burgundy plants – like Cotinus x coggygria, common name smoke bush. Coleus are also great in containers. Be sure to keep them at 55 degrees or warmer for best results.
Container planting is even more popular this year. Club members will be on hand to help you put together plant combinations that will look smashing all summer long. For cascades of color choose from the best varieties of Calibrachoa (million bells) in blue, gold, red, white, carmine and melon. Look for petunias, lobelia, verbena, nicotiana, impatiens and begonias – all in hard to find colors. For depth and texture add Impmoea ‘Blackie”, Helichrysum ‘Little Leaf’, and Perilla ‘Moonlight Seas’ – the latter is a choice chocolaty burgundy plant the looks like a coleus on steroids!
Every “hot” color garden needs to have Marigold ‘Lemon Gem’ and ‘Tangerine Gem’. These are great against anything blue – one good choice is Salvia ‘Blue Denim’, and will only get better as the summer unfolds. Hard to find Cosmos ‘Cosmic Orange’ and the 8-inch ‘Limara Limon’ are also great choices for beds and containers.
Choose from approximately 600 gallon perennials – some rare and unusual specimens can be found if you shop early.
Proceeds from the sale help to support community civic projects, world gardening, scholarships, garden therapy, youth gardening and environmental activities.
